Recovery of the Amazon – The Brasilians

Recovery of the Amazon

Projects for the recovery of the vegetation cover of the Legal Amazon received investments of R$ 200 million, through a public call launched by Brazil, during the program of the 23rd Climate Conference in Bonn, Germany. The deadline for registration and participation in the public call goes until June 8, 2018, and the list of selected projects is expected to be released on October 13, 2018.

Associations, cooperatives, and private foundations can submit proposals. The initiatives must, according to the text of the public call, contribute to the “increase of native vegetation cover in the Legal Amazon and the strengthening of the technical and management structure of the recovery sector’s productive chain of vegetation cover.”

The resources used to invest in the projects come from the Amazon Fund, which raises donations for non-reimbursable investments in prevention, monitoring, and combating deforestation, as well as promoting conservation and sustainable use of the Legal Amazon.

The launch of the public call is one of the measures of the Government of Brazil to help the country meet the targets set in the Paris Agreement. During COP 23, participating countries advanced discussions on the commitments made by more than 190 nations in the agreement.

The Brazilian target is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 37% by 2025 and by 43% by 2030.

Brazil committed when it joined the Bonn Challenge to achieve the restoration of 12 million hectares of forests by 2030. Also at COP 23, and with a view to vegetation restoration, the country launched the National Plan for the Recovery of Native Vegetation (Planaveg).

According to the Ministry of the Environment, each project must recover a minimum area of three thousand hectares, considering different techniques to be used (natural regeneration management, densification, seed planting, seedling planting) and the arrangement of potential partners, as applicable and by region.

To participate, activities must aim at the recovery of areas classified in the following categories: Nature Conservation Unit, public possession or domain; Legal Reserve and Permanent Preservation Area in Land Reform Settlements or in Quilombola Territories; Indigenous Lands; and Legal Reserve and Permanent Preservation Areas in small properties or rural holdings of up to four fiscal modules.
