The Danger of Backpack Weights

One of the major concerns for parents with children in schools is keeping an eye on the weight of the students’ backpacks.

Professionals from the Rehabilitation Program advise that the backpack should weigh no more than 10% of the child’s weight. For example, a child weighing 30 kilograms should carry a backpack that weighs an average of 3 kilograms.

A heavy backpack can cause back pain, minor muscle injuries, and even spinal deviations. Parents should be especially attentive when children complain of discomfort and back pain. If complaints are frequent, it is recommended to consult a specialist.

A study found that 23% of the evaluated students showed significant postural changes. This work was conducted with 451 students.

The postural problem can be corrected with changes in students’ habits at school and at home.

The backpack should be carried with one strap on each shoulder. The straps should be adjusted to the height of the lower back. If the backpack is heavy, using carts is recommended.

When sitting, children should keep their backs, feet, and arms well supported, avoiding sliding in the chair and tilting their heads too much.

When lying down to sleep, the spine should be aligned. High pillows or head supports should be avoided.

The recommendation is for parents to evaluate their children twice a year, observing the height of the shoulders, waist, and whether one side of the spine is higher than the other. If any changes are detected, it is advisable to consult a doctor.
