The animated short film “Message from the Future II: The Years of Repair” dares to dream of a future where the year 2020 is a turning point. In the storyline, the lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic and global uprisings against racism mobilize us to build a better society – one where no one is sacrificed and everyone is considered essential.
It is a film about the world we can build if we learn the lessons from this moment of overlapping crises. The plot tells the story of a significant social and global change that begins in 2020.
The film presents a possible version of how we could emerge from this tumultuous moment, not just by returning to “normal,” but by creating something
much better.
The international release of the film took place in October, online and with a Portuguese version (and three other languages besides English: Arabic, Spanish, and French).
The animation features the drawings of artist Molly Crabapple. The political narrative of the film is authored by Naomi Klein, Avi Lewis, and co-writer Opal Tometi.
“The Years of Repair” includes an international cast of narrators: Opal Tometi, Emma Thompson, Gael García Bernal, and Nigerian poet and activist Nnimmo Bassey.
“The Years of Repair” follows the short film “A Message from the Future” (2019), which stars U.S. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The first film was produced by the same creative team as the sequel and garnered over 12 million views on digital platforms. The short was also nominated for the 2020 Emmy.
“The Years of Repair” is being launched with the support of an incredible group of movement partners who are developing campaigns aligned with the ideas presented in the film, including: The Movement for Black Lives, Public Services International, La Via Campesina, The Sunrise Movement, The NDN Collective, Global Nurses United, Amazon Watch, Greenpeace International, The Dream Defenders, Haymarket Books, and The Leap.
