Government adjusts minimum salary for teaching to R$ 2,5 thousand

The Ministry of Education announced that the minimum salary for teaching will be adjusted to R$ 2,557.74. The increase is 4.17% and is effective from January 1st for public basic education teachers with a high school degree, normal modality, and a 40-hour weekly workload.

Since 2009, the adjustment occurs in the first month of the year. The update is in accordance with what is provided by law and was calculated based on the same percentage of growth of the Minimum Annual Value per Student (VAA) related to the initial years of urban elementary education. In 2018, the VAA was R$ 3,048.73, and in 2017, R$ 2,926.56.

The variation of 4.17% was applied to the value of the National Professional Salary Floor (PSPN) from the previous year, which was R$ 2,455.35.

The VAA is set by the President of the Republic and cannot be lower than the ratio between the forecast of total revenue for the Fund for the Maintenance and Development of Elementary Education and the Valorization of Teaching (Fundef) and the total number of enrollments in elementary education in the previous year, plus the total estimate of new enrollments.
