Hurricane Unearths Cannonballs Over 150 Years Old

The passage of Hurricane Matthew along the east coast of the United States unearthed cannonballs used in the American Civil War (1861 – 1865). The artillery was discovered on a beach in South Carolina, and a bomb squad from the U.S. Air Force was called in to detonate the explosives.

According to the American network CNN, the artillery was found by a resident of Charleston who was walking on Folly Beach, a beach located in a non-residential area of the city. “You can see the fuse holes in the balls,” a police officer who responded to the call told the network.

At least seventeen deaths associated with the hurricane have been recorded in the four states it passed through (Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia). About 2 million homes were left without power. In North Carolina, flooding forced thousands of people to seek emergency shelters.

Hurricane Matthew, which caused destruction in the Caribbean, lost strength and moved away from the American coast. The powerful hurricane, the strongest storm in the Caribbean in nearly a decade, hit Haiti with winds of 233 kilometers per hour and torrential rains that left over 1,000 dead and 1.4 million people in need of humanitarian aid, reported the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
