Eadweard J. Muybridge – The Brasilians

Eadweard J. Muybridge

Eadweard J. Muybridge (1830-1904) was born in Kingston, England, on April 9, 1830. Of the many names he adopted, Edward James Muggeridge is the most well-known throughout his career as a photographer.

Eadweard J. Muybridge developed almost all of his work as a photographer in the United States, becoming famous for his image-capturing technique, using multiple cameras in different positions at the same time to photograph a moving object.

After a stagecoach accident, in his early twenties,
he decided to learn the art of photography in England. He returned to the United States in 1867, where he gained his reputation photographing landscapes.

The photos of a horse that Muybridge took in 1872 became famous for showing the animal in motion, with all four hooves off the ground. Muybridge invented a machine called the zoopraxiscope, which allowed these images to be viewed.

Eadweard J. Muybridge made a significant contribution to cinema and many consider him the main precursor of cinematography. After several decades working in the United States, Muybridge returned to England in 1894.

Eadweard J. Muybridge died in Kingston, England, on May 8, 1904.
