It’s Carnival in Brazil! – The Brasilians

It’s Carnival in Brazil!

Carnival 2018 will be celebrated in Brazil from February 9 to 13. This is a movable celebration (it always occurs 47 days before Easter), but it is necessarily celebrated on a Tuesday.

The country is known for this celebration, celebrated throughout the country, especially in Rio de Janeiro, Pernambuco, Bahia, and São Paulo, with large costume parades. But it is Recife (PE) that stands out for having the largest Carnival block in the world, the “Galo da Madrugada.”

Originally, in the Middle Ages, the term “carnival” means “farewell to meat” (carnis leva-le, in Latin), representing the popular festivities that preceded a period of great fasting.

Carnival was adopted by the Catholic Church as the beginning of Lent starting in 590 A.D., but in Brazil, this popular festival began to be celebrated in the mid-17th century, and only in the 20th century did it consolidate into the format known today.
