Known Brazilian doctor, Dr. Jesus Cheda was found dead in his apartment in New York City. The doctor was unmarried, had no children, and no family in the city. According to experts, the cause of death was a Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA) that occurred at the end of August.
Dr. Cheda was originally from Sorocaba, São Paulo, and moved to New York in 1956 to complete his residency after finishing his medical degree at the Universidade Federal Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro. After 8 years in the city, he opened his own practice and, despite specializing in oncology, worked as a general practitioner, treating many Brazilians living in New York, including well-known names like journalist Paulo Francis.
The elite clientele, which also included American actress Sharon Stones, was a symbol of his successful professional journey. He was a member of the American Medical Association and was part of the Spanish Society of Medicine. He was honored by Cardinal O’Connor, receiving the Order of the Holy Sepulchre in 1988. A victory for a
boy from a poor childhood with few resources, who fought with great determination to fulfill his dream of becoming a doctor.
Dr. Cheda was very beloved by the local Brazilian community. He made a point of attending Brazilian events and having direct contact with his fellow countrymen. One of his closest friends, Jean Frison, general manager of Churrascaria Plataforma, keeps some memories of the doctor:
“He had a very old Mercedes that always had problems, and every now and then I had to go rescue him,” he recalls. “He talked a lot and had iron health. Even at 87, he went to the gym, to church every Sunday, and never complained about anything,” he adds.
Even after living in NYC for over 50 years, Dr. Cheda never forgot Brazil. He had a foundation called Nacime Miguel Sophia Cheda, a tribute to his parents and sister, which carries out a series of social, community, and educational work in Sorocaba.
Dr. Cheda’s body was transferred to Brazil and buried in the cemetery of Saudade, in Sorocaba, on September 9.
