In partnership with the Ministry of Labor, the Brazilian Post and Telegraph Company (ECT) will start issuing the Work and Social Security Card (CTPS). The project was announced after a meeting in Brasília and is initially set to be implemented only in São Paulo, with plans to expand to other federal units. According to data released by the ministry, the state was responsible for 580,000 of the more than 2.3 million work cards issued across the country between January and May of this year.
In the assessment of the executive secretary of the Ministry of Labor, the
goal of the measure is to decentralize service, making it “more agile and accessible” to workers. Throughout Brazil, the issuance of work cards is available at the Ministry of Labor agencies and in decentralized units, through partnerships made with states and municipalities. The service network already has more than 2,100 service points spread across the country.CTPS
Created in 1969, the Work and Social Security Card (CTPS) is a mandatory document for anyone wishing to provide any type of service in Brazil. It guarantees workers access to some of the main labor rights, such as unemployment insurance, social security benefits, and the Severance Indemnity Fund (FGTS).
