Do carbohydrates at night make you gain weight? Myth or truth? – The Brasilians

Do carbohydrates at night make you gain weight? Myth or truth?

It is important to be careful when making decisions related to food, especially without the guidance of health professionals. Carbohydrates are one of the nutrients necessary for health.

The specialist Alexis Fonseca Welker, a professor of biochemistry, nutrition, and physiology at the University of Brasília, discusses the topic. “Every time a person consumes a carbohydrate-rich food, the body burns less fat, since it has the carbohydrate as ‘fuel’ to burn. In other words, the more carbohydrates you have in your body, the more your body uses carbohydrates to generate energy,” explains the professor.

“When a person consumes carbohydrates during the day and engages in physical activity, they will accumulate less fat. That’s why some people say that carbohydrates at night make you gain weight, as soon after, the body will enter rest mode, when the metabolic rate would drop. But in practice, studies contradict each other, and there is no consensus.”

Consuming carbohydrates, the main source of energy for the body, is part of a balanced and healthy diet. What needs to be kept in mind is that we should have several meals a day, in smaller portions. Fruits, which also contain carbohydrates and are essential for good nutrition and body function, are great snack options between meals.

Another point to consider is the need for fiber, which is abundant in whole foods and fruits. Fiber helps eliminate waste and toxins produced during digestion, stimulates the cleaning and functioning of the intestines, and promotes better nutrient absorption.

Finally, remember that replacing dinner with snacks at night reduces the daily intake of foods such as rice, beans, vegetables, greens, among others, and that this substitution is more frequent in individuals with excess weight and does not aid in weight loss.
