João Pessoa (PB), Florianópolis (SC), and Porto Alegre (RS) are the first Brazilian cities to have their own “.br” domain for local websites on the internet. The news was announced by the Núcleo de Informação e Coordenação do Ponto BR (NIC.br), which is responsible, among other duties, for the registration of “.br” domains.

“This initiative allows for the identification of the business with its physical location, in addition to reinforcing local identity,” stated Maximiliano Martinhão, the Secretary of Information Technology Policy at the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications (MCTIC).

The “jampa.br” domain for the capital of Paraíba is already activated, as well as “floripa.br” and “poa.br”.

To define the personalized naming of the addresses, NIC.br launched a voting campaign in May of this year for cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants to choose their own domain.

Throughout the country, another 43 municipalities are participating in the initiative, and more than 5,000 suggestions have been sent to NIC.br.

NIC.br is a civil entity, private law, and non-profit, which implements the decisions and projects of the Internet Management Committee in Brazil (CGI.br). CGI.br is responsible for establishing strategic guidelines related to the use and development of the internet in the country.
