The number of homicides in the country registered a 23% decrease in the first two months of 2019 compared to the same period last year. There was a decline in all nine crimes recorded on the Sinesp platform, which consolidates information from police reports across all states and the Federal District.
In the first two months of 2019, 6,543 homicides were recorded, while in the first two months of 2018, the number reached 8,498. Attempts of homicide fell by 15%, and robbery followed by death saw a 19% decrease compared to the first two months of last year.
According to the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Sergio Moro, the credit for this result goes to the integrated efforts between the federal government and local governments. He stated that it is necessary to work towards making this reduction permanent and constant. The minister also highlighted that the approval of the Anti-Crime Package will contribute to the reduction of violent crimes, as well as combating corruption and organized crime.
The Sinesp data shows that there was also a decrease in cargo theft (40.6%), vehicle theft (28.3%), robbery at financial institutions (36.7%), vehicle burglary (10.9%), rape (7%), and bodily injury followed by death (6%).
Criminal Statistics
Since March 2019, the country has had official and reliable criminal statistics published on the website of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security based on police reports from the states and the Federal District. The information is consolidated through Sinesp (National System of Public Security Information, Prisons, and Traceability of Weapons and Ammunition, and Genetic Material, Fingerprints, and Weapons).
The aim is to consolidate, in an unprecedented way, an official source of national data with information on public security in a swift and transparent manner. The National Secretariat of Public Security (Senasp) is responsible for receiving the data, verifying it, and making it public.
Publicly accessible and free of charge, the platform makes statistical information on crimes such as: rape, bodily injury followed by death, intentional homicide, robbery followed by death, attempted homicide, vehicle theft, vehicle burglary, cargo theft, and robbery at financial institutions available.
