The Voice and Swing of a Blonde from Pernambuco in New York – The Brasilians

The Voice and Swing of a Blonde from Pernambuco in New York

Talent alone is not enough to face today’s challenging music market. There must also be a lot of persistence in the face of such competition. When you are outside your home country, in the midst of another culture and language, it takes even more courage. This is something that this 27-year-old from Pernambuco has in abundance. Laís Mota, a resident of New York for three years, did not think twice when the opportunity arose to continue her successful career that began in Brazil here.

She has just released online her second single, “Te Enlouquecer,” a collaboration with fellow Pernambucan singer Lennon Monteiro. Recorded in Recife and New York, the music video showcases a swing that keeps everyone moving. “Te Enlouquecer” is the second song from the project “4 Seasons,” a series of songs about love throughout the four seasons of the year. The first song in the series, “Sold Out,” was released earlier this year and is part of Laís’s first EP, “LalaCrazy Yeah!”, which was also recently launched.

Laís started singing by chance when a friend invited her to do a cover of singer Claudia Leitte. Until then, Laís danced but never thought she could sing. Family and friends thought she resembled the Bahian singer, and during family gatherings, Laís would always give a little performance imitating Claudia. The fun began to get serious when Claudia Leitte herself saw a video of Laís and started encouraging her. Gradually, Laís began performing in her city and soon across Brazil. She participated in several TV shows, such as “Hoje em Dia” on TV Record and “Máquina da Fama” on SBT, where she sang live with Claudia Leitte.

Encouraged by the Bahian singer herself, Laís began to develop her own career. Although she sang axé when doing covers, the Pernambucan realized that her true talent lay in forró and frevo. In 2014, Laís composed and released her first song, “Sintonia.” In just a few days, it reached 10,000 views. She traveled through the Northeast doing shows and soon started being recognized on the streets of her city.

Noticing that her artistic career was becoming serious, Laís decided to spend some time in the United States to study and buy time to organize herself and pursue producers and sponsorship. However, in the Capital of the World, everything happens. Her three-month stay extended when Laís met her current husband and ended up having the opportunity to record her first EP here. Composing and singing also in English, the Pernambucan wants to spread a bit of the Brazilian musical talent she carries rooted in her Northeastern origins throughout the United States.

Currently, Laís is working on promoting “Te Enlouquecer” and preparing to record the third song of the “4 Seasons” project, which is expected to be released in July or August.

Laís’s first EP “LalaCrazy Yeah!” and the songs from the “4 Seasons” project are available for download on digital platforms such as Spotify and YouTube (laismotaoficial).
