Plants for Pollinators on U.S. Highways – The Brasilians

A new federal grant program aims to attract pollinators to millions of acres along American roads.

The Invasive Plant Removal Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation, will assist government officials and Native American tribes in eradicating invasive plants and replacing them with native grasses.

Pollinators help keep ecosystems healthy. However, wild pollinators, including the monarch butterfly and various species of bees, are in decline due to diseases, habitat degradation, and pesticide use.

The new planting will take place along railways and highways, as well as smaller local roads, thanks to $250 million allocated as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act*, which President Biden signed into law in 2021.
