Plan to Reduce Carbon Emissions in Brazil Takes Effect

Starting September 1, the Sectoral Plan for Climate Change Adaptation and Low Carbon Emission in Agriculture (ABC+) for the period 2020-2030 will come into effect.

The ordinance detailing the sectoral policy – created to reduce carbon emissions from the Brazilian agricultural sector through incentives and support for environmental technologies – was published in the Official Gazette of the Union by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa).

According to the ministry, the ABC+ plan aims to “promote adaptation to climate change and control greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Brazilian agriculture, with increased efficiency and resilience of production systems, considering an integrated management of the rural landscape.”

Among the goals projected for the year 2030 is to expand, by 30 million hectares, the areas designated for the adoption of practices for the recovery of degraded pastures; by 12.58 million hectares the areas aimed at the adoption of no-till systems; and by 10.10 million hectares the areas with the adoption of integration systems.

The government also foresees an expansion of four million hectares for the adoption of planted forests; 13 million hectares for the adoption of bioinputs; three million hectares for the region with the adoption of irrigated systems; 208.40 million cubic meters for the adoption of animal production waste management; and five million for cattle in intensive finishing.

By “stimulating the adoption of systems, practices, products, and sustainable production processes,” the ABC+ plan aims to reduce vulnerabilities and increase the resilience of agricultural production systems, conserving natural resources and enhancing biodiversity and the climate stability of production systems.
