Federal Police Carries Out Warrants at Jair Bolsonaro’s Home, Who Will Wear Ankle Monitor

The Federal Police is carrying out two search and seizure warrants on the morning of this Friday (18) at addresses related to former President Jair Bolsonaro.

He was taken to the State Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration to be fitted with an electronic ankle monitor.

Under the decision, Bolsonaro, in addition to having to wear the ankle monitor, is prohibited from using social media.

He must stay home between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., and is prohibited from communicating with other defendants or with ambassadors and diplomats from other countries. Additionally, he cannot leave the DF jurisdiction.

The former president already had his passport seized in February 2024.

Defense

In a statement, the former president’s defense team said it received “with surprise and indignation” the application of such precautionary measures. “The defense of former President Jair Bolsonaro received with surprise and indignation the imposition of severe precautionary measures against him, who up to the present moment has always complied with all determinations of the Judiciary. The defense will speak out at the appropriate time, after reviewing the judicial decision”.

In a social media post, the leader of the Liberal Party (PL) in the Chamber, Representative Sóstenes Cavalcante, lamented the court’s decision mandating the use of the electronic ankle monitor.

The PL also issued a statement expressing “surprise and repudiation” over the Federal Police operation. According to the statement, signed by the party president, Valdemar Costa Neto, Jair Bolsonaro “has always been at the disposal of the authorities”.

The operation was announced in a brief note from the Federal Police, released this Friday (18).

According to the note, “two search and seizure warrants, plus various precautionary measures other than imprisonment, in fulfillment of a decision by the Supreme Federal Court, in the scope of PET n.º 14129”.
