Official: You No Longer Need to Isolate for Five Days If You Get Covid

Americans who test positive for the coronavirus no longer need to stay home, avoiding work or school, for five days, according to new guidelines released on Friday (Mar. 1) by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the United States.

The agency is easing its isolation recommendations for the first time since 2021 to reflect the changing landscape of covid-19 four years after the virus emerged. The CDC presented its justification for the change in a 25-page document outlining the current risk environment. Although coronavirus infections remain at levels similar to previous years, new infections are now causing less severe illness and far fewer hospitalizations or deaths, CDC data shows.

The agency stated that it is simplifying its guidelines for respiratory viral illnesses and that the new recommendations align covid-19 with how other common viruses, like the flu and RSV, are managed.

The basic advice remains the same: stay home when you are sick and away from others. Under the new approach, people who test positive for the coronavirus will no longer need to isolate at home if they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without the aid of medication and if their overall symptoms are improving.

As people resume normal activities, the updated guidelines encourage them to take additional preventive measures over the next five days to curb the spread of the illness. This includes improving ventilation by opening windows to bring in fresh air from outside or purifying indoor air, frequently washing hands and cleaning frequently touched surfaces, wearing a well-fitted mask, and maintaining distance from others.

Other countries have implemented similar guidelines, including the UK, Australia, France, and Canada, and have not found significant changes in the spread or severity of the disease, according to a CDC blog post on respiratory guidelines.

Many experts stated that these changes should have been made long ago and that public health guidelines needed to shift to a more practical approach. The reality of covid-19 is very different now than it was at the beginning of the pandemic when the population had no protection against a new pathogen. By the end of last year, 98% of people in the United States had antibodies to the coronavirus from vaccination, previous infection, or both, providing stronger immunity against the disease.
