Brazil now has 889 registered breweries. This record number was achieved after significant expansion in the sector in 2018, with the opening of 210 new breweries (a remarkable growth of 23% compared to the previous year). The data comes from the Beer Yearbook in Brazil, a survey released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA).
Currently, the country produces a total of 16,968 products (including canned/bottled beers and draft beer), of which approximately 6,800 were registered in the last year. According to the Ministry, the sector’s good moment results from the increased demand in the country for craft beers.
In total, 479 municipalities in the country have at least one brewery today, nearly 10% of all Brazilian cities. The leader in the ranking is Porto Alegre (RS), with 35 breweries. Next is Nova Lima (MG) with 19 and Caxias do Sul (RS) with 16. Rio Grande do Sul is the state with the highest number of breweries (186), followed by São Paulo (165) and Minas Gerais (115).
