If you want to have a year
Not simply repainted with everything in the right place,
New
(starting with what’s inside you)
New, spontaneous, you don’t find it so perfect,
But with it you eat, walk,
Love, understand, work.
You don’t need to drink champagne or any other drink,
You don’t need to make visits or receive cards
Do plants receive messages?
Do they send telegrams?
You don’t need
To make a list of good resolutions
To file away in the desk drawer.
You don’t need to cry in regret
For silly things you’ve done
Or half believe
That by decree of hope
Starting in January things will change
And everything will be light, reward,
Justice among men and nations
Freedom with the scent and taste
Of morning bread,
Your rights respected, starting
With the sacred right to live.
To have a New Year
That deserves that name
You, my friend, have to deserve it,
You have to make it new, I know that
It’s not easy,
But try, experiment, be conscious.
It’s within you that the New Year
Has always been asleep and waiting.
