For years, the federal government has been warning passengers that they will need a new driver’s license to board domestic flights. But for years this requirement has been postponed. Now the new rules will actually come into effect, and there is already a date for that.
If you haven’t obtained your “REAL ID” or “enhanced driver’s license,” now might be a good time to visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles.
State authorities are warning their residents that soon they will need the updated form of driver’s license if they want to board a commercial flight using this identification document.
The change, which has been on the horizon for 20 years, will finally take effect.
The driver’s license as it exists today will no longer be an acceptable form of identification at airports across the country starting May 3, 2023. On this date, the federal law “Real ID Act” will go into effect, establishing minimum standards for issuing documents such as driver’s licenses. The new rules aim to combat fraud and create a more secure identification system.
“Citizens are not required to obtain a REAL ID; however, starting in May 2023, if you normally use your driver’s license or non-driver ID to fly within the United States, you will likely want an updated license,” said Robert Duffy, TSA Federal Security Director, at a press conference at Westchester County Airport in New York.
“Otherwise, you will need to use a valid passport or another form of identification accepted by the federal government. The consequence of not having a valid ID is that you will not be allowed to board your flight,” he added.
It is important to emphasize that all licenses issued after states implement the new rules are already compliant with the REAL ID regulation. Licenses issued before the program begins are valid for driving and serve as identification for other purposes, but not for boarding a flight.
How to Obtain an Enhanced License
Each state has its own requirements for issuing the new license. However, the minimum required is proof of identity, Social Security number, proof of residency, and proof of legal status. All documents must be original, and the application must be made in person. The cost of the enhanced license is the same as the current license in most states. In some, like Pennsylvania, there is an additional fee.
The best course of action is to visit your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles website and check the requirements for obtaining the new document.
