The year 2024 marks the 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United States and Brazil. Join PCE this November for a bicentennial celebration featuring two centuries of incredible music from South America, from the early works of native Brazilian composers to a world premiere commission by André Mehmari, a prominent figure in the current Brazilian classical scene.
Curated by guest curator Flávio Chamis (composer, conductor, and educator), the concert offers a panoramic view of Brazilian concert music. The program includes a stormy classical overture by José Maurício Nunes, the modern U.S. premiere of Quadros Amazônicos by Francisco Mignone (an orchestral suite based on Amazonian myths), Bachianas Brasileiras No. 4 by Heitor Villa-Lobos, a set of Brazilian popular songs performed by Elin Melgarejo from DC, and chamber music featuring Latin GRAMMY-nominated violist Tatjana Mead Chamis.
