Last Chance: Alfredo Volpi at Gladstone Gallery

Gladstone Gallery presents, until December 22, an exhibition of historical works by Brazilian painter Alfredo Volpi (1896–1988), the first solo presentation of his work in the United States.Volpi is considered one of the most influential and celebrated Brazilian painters, whom the prominent intellectual Mario Pedrosa called “the master of his time.”

He was a prominent painter of the Brazilian artistic and cultural modernist movement. Born in Lucca, Italy, he was brought by his parents to São Paulo, Brazil, less than two years later, became a Brazilian citizen, and lived there for most of his life. He was one of the most important artists of the so-called Santa Helena Group, formed in the 1930s with Francisco Rebolo, Clóvis Graciano, Mario Zanini, Rossir Osir, Bonadei, Fulvio Pennacchi, and others.

He passed away on May 28, 1988.
