Jair Bolsonaro Shows Clinical Improvement, but Remains Hospitalized in ICU in Brasília

Jair Bolsonaro remains hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Hospital DF Star, in Brasília (DF), for treatment of bilateral bacterial pneumonia caused by bronchoaspiration. The information was released in a medical bulletin on Monday morning (16). The medical team reported that the former president showed clinical and laboratory improvement in the last 24 hours.

The bulletin indicates recovery of renal function and partial reduction of inflammatory markers, signaling a response to antibiotic treatment. Despite progress in his condition, Bolsonaro remains in intensive care. According to the doctors responsible for his care, he continues to receive clinical support and is undergoing respiratory and motor physiotherapy sessions while hospitalized in the unit.

The medical document states that, at this time, there is no predicted discharge from the ICU. The previous bulletin, released on Sunday, had already indicated improvement in renal function but pointed to a new elevation of inflammatory markers in the blood. In response to this change in his clinical condition, the team decided to expand antibiotic coverage.

In the statement, the doctors noted that the patient “evolved with clinical stability and improvement in renal function, but with a new elevation of inflammatory markers in the blood.”

The bulletin adds that, “in light of these changes, there was a need to expand antibiotic coverage.” The bulletin is signed by doctors Claudio Birolini, Leandro Echenique, and Brasil Caiado, as well as the coordinator of the hospital’s general ICU, Antônio Aurélio de Paiva Fagundes Jr., and the general director of the unit, Allisson B. Barcelos Borges.

Hospitalization After Feeling Ill

Bolsonaro was taken to the hospital on Friday morning (13), after feeling ill in the early hours of the morning at the 19th Military Police Battalion in Brasília, known as “Papudinha.” The former president is serving his sentence at the facility, convicted for his involvement in the coup plot surrounding the 2022 elections. According to medical reports, he arrived at the hospital with oxygen support, low oxygen saturation, fever, headache, and chills.

According to records from the battalion’s medical team, the former president was fine the night before but had an episode of hiccups. According to reports, he chose to take medication after the end of a game and, around 2 a.m., began to feel nauseous and shaky. Care was provided at 6:45 a.m., when the team decided to transfer him for hospital evaluation.

The hospitalization reignited calls from the family for Bolsonaro to serve his sentence under house arrest. On Saturday (14), Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) said he believes it is appropriate for his father to return home. According to him, “Bolsonaro needs constant monitoring. The medications he takes, combined with the aftereffects of the stabbing, require more than double the usual health precautions. The right and fair path would be to go home.”
