Fire at Inn in Porto Alegre, South Brazil, Leaves at Least 10 Dead

At least ten people died in a large-scale fire that hit an inn in downtown Porto Alegre in the early hours of Friday (26). The Military Fire Department of Rio Grande do Sul deployed five trucks to combat the flames in the three-story building. On social media, the agency reported that the fire was brought under control.

“According to our commander of the 1st Battalion of the Fire Department, Lieutenant Colonel Lúcio Junes da Silva, ten victims have been confirmed and the location was operating irregularly. The criminal investigation team is on site to identify the victims and investigate the causes of the fire,” highlighted the fire department in a statement.

The injured were taken to the Porto Alegre Emergency Hospital (HPS). Also via social media, the Porto Alegre city hall reported that two people are in serious condition and six are receiving treatment for less severe injuries.

“With deep sadness, I am following the investigation of the fire with victims at Pousada Garoa, in Farrapos. The priority now is to assist the citizens rescued and taken to HPS. The city hall is working to support the residents and aid in the investigation of this tragedy,” posted Mayor Sebastião Melo.

On his profile on X, the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, stated that the fire causes deep dismay. “We remain mobilized in the aftermath of this tragedy and in identifying the causes of the flames. My condolences to the families of the victims.”

In a statement, the Civil Police of Rio Grande do Sul announced that an investigation into the incident will be initiated.

“Investigative measures are being taken and monitored alongside the fire department, Civil Defense, Military Brigade, and General Institute of Forensics. Technical reports and results from other investigative inquiries are being awaited.”

On social media, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed sadness and concern over the number of deaths in the fire. According to him, the establishment housed vulnerable individuals in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul.

“My solidarity to the families and friends who lost their loved ones,” he posted.
