The final day to file income tax has arrived this Tuesday (15). However, if you need more time, you can request an extension and gain until nearly the end of this year to settle accounts with the U.S. federal revenue service.
Taxpayers have until midnight Tuesday in their respective time zones to submit their tax returns for the 2024 tax year. Still, if a taxpayer needs more time to file, they can request a deadline extension from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) until October 15 using Form 4868. Individuals can file electronically or mail the form with a postmark by today, April 15.
And it’s important to note that individuals are still liable for any taxes owed by April 15 and must be prepared to pay now to avoid penalties and interest. In other words, taxpayers who owe money to the IRS must make a payment by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday; they can arrange with the agency through a payment plan if necessary.
Those due a refund will not face penalties but should still request an extension for filing the return.
