The first lady of Brazil, Janja Lula da Silva, cursed billionaire Elon Musk during a G20 event last weekend, where she spoke about the need to regulate social media to curb misinformation.
A ship’s horn sounded while she was speaking on Saturday, and she joked: “I think it’s Elon Musk,” before adding: “I’m not afraid of you, f**k you, Elon Musk.”
Musk, owner of the social network X, reacted to a video of the episode by posting a laughing emoji. In another post, he added: “They will lose the next election,” referring to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The president’s wife, by using vulgar and inappropriate language, ignored or took advantage of being at an event associated with the G20 summit, a group of the world’s largest nations, which has been generating media coverage worldwide.
Musk’s social network, X, was suspended in Brazil for a month for failing to appoint a legal representative in the country and ignoring orders from the superior court to block accounts accused of spreading “false news” and hate messages.
X was allowed to resume service in Brazil last month after reversing course and starting to comply with court rulings.
The dispute was one of a series of recent confrontations between Musk, who sees himself as a defender of free speech, and governments like Brazil, Australia, and the United Kingdom that are seeking to prevent the spread of online misinformation.
