Fifa to Advance Start of the 2022 World Cup – The Brasilians

Fifa to Advance Start of the 2022 World Cup

The International Football Federation (Fifa) is set to advance the start date of the World Cup by one day – November 20 – so that the host country, Qatar, can play the opening match.

Previously, the tournament was scheduled to begin on Monday, November 21, with Senegal playing against the Netherlands.

However, it is understood that Qatar wants to play first, as has become customary for the host nation of the tournament. Therefore, their match against Ecuador is set to move up to Sunday, November 20, at 7 PM BST (2 PM Eastern time).

The decision still needs to be approved by the FIFA Council, composed of President Gianni Infantino and the leaders of each continental confederation (UEFA, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, CAF, AFC, and OFC).

A consensus is expected, meaning that the World Cup will now take place from November 20 to December 18.

Since 2006, the host country has participated in the opening game of the World Cups. Before that, the reigning champion was usually the one to kick off the matches.
