The Federal Police on Friday morning (July 18) carried out two search and seizure warrants at addresses linked to former President Jair Bolsonaro.
He was taken to the Secretaria de Estado da Administração Penitenciária to be fitted with an electronic ankle monitor.
Under the decision, Bolsonaro, in addition to wearing an electronic ankle monitor, is prohibited from using social media. He must remain at home from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and is barred from communicating with other individuals facing proceedings in the Supreme Federal Court or with ambassadors and diplomats from other countries. Furthermore, he cannot leave the federal capital, Brasília, where the seat of government is located.
The former president’s passport was already seized in February 2024.
Defense
In a statement, the former president’s defense team expressed being “surprised and outraged by the imposition of serious precautionary measures against him, who until now has always complied with all Judiciary orders. The defense will respond at the appropriate time, after reviewing the court’s decision.”
The Liberal Party, to which Bolsonaro is affiliated, also issued a statement expressing “surprise and repudiation” of the operation. The statement, signed by party president Valdemar Costa Neto, states that Jair Bolsonaro “has always been at the disposal of the authorities.”
The operation was detailed in a brief Federal Police statement on Friday (July 18) to execute “two search and seizure warrants, as well as various precautionary measures other than imprisonment, pursuant to a Supreme Federal Court decision.”
