According to a report by the newspaper Correio da Manhã, the Brazilian Federal Government has decided to extend the start date for the visa requirement for Americans, Canadians, and Australians visiting Brazil for tourism or business to April 10. The visa requirement was originally set to take effect next Wednesday, January 10.
As reported by the Brazilian publication, President Lula responded to a request from the tourism sector. The Ministers of Tourism, Celso Sabino, Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa, Economic Development, Geraldo Alckmin, and the president of Embratur, Marcelo Freixo, worked together with the Minister of Foreign Relations, Mauro Vieira, to postpone the implementation until after the high season.
One of the arguments is that there are 8,000 foreign passengers in the cruise sector alone who are unable to visit Brazil. The MRE system still has flaws that could negatively impact foreigners coming for Carnival.
