Medida Provisória, by Lázaro Ramos, to be screened in NY

The award-winning Brazilian film “Medida Provisória,” starring Taís Araújo, Seu Jorge, and Anglo-Brazilian actor Alfred Enoch, and directed by Lázaro Ramos, will be screened in a special session in New York on Wednesday, December 7, at 7 PM, at Teachers College, Columbia University. After the screening, Lázaro Ramos and Taís Araújo will participate in a panel discussion and answer questions from the audience.

Set in a near-dystopian future in Rio de Janeiro, a lawyer sues the Brazilian government for reparations for all descendants of African slaves in the country.

The authoritarian government responds by signing a provisional measure sending all Black citizens to Africa as an excuse to settle the debts of slavery—creating chaos, protests, and an underground resistance movement that inspires the nation.

Finding themselves at the center of terror, two cousins take refuge in an apartment, where they discuss social and racial issues and share the same yearning for change in the country.

The film, marking Lázaro Ramos’s debut as a director in cinema, has won a series of awards, including here in the United States. Recently, at the main Brazilian film festival abroad, the Inffinito Film Festival, “Medida Provisória” received three awards: Best Screenplay, Best Film, and Best Supporting Actor for Seu Jorge. Prior to that, it had already received other awards, such as Best Screenplay at the Indie Memphis Film Festival.

Lázaro Ramos also received the Man of the Year in Cinema award from GQ magazine.
