How about leaving behind the boring daily routine and living temporarily in Brazil while continuing to work remotely?
In January 2022, Brazil established a visa for digital nomads that allows foreign workers to live in the South American country while working remotely. It is a temporary residence permit valid for one year, which can be extended for another year.
Who can apply?
The Brazilian visa for digital nomads is issued to self-employed individuals as well as remote employees working for a company located outside of Brazil.
To qualify for the visa/residence permit, the immigrant must provide proof of their status as a digital nomad with the following documentation:
• Personal statement attesting to the ability to perform remote work (regardless of location);
• Employment contract, service provision contract, or other document proving their employer or income from a foreign source (non-Brazilian employer);
• Proof of regular minimum income of $1,500.00 per month or availability of $18,000.00 in bank funds.
How to apply?
The temporary visa can be applied for at any Brazilian consular representation abroad, upon presentation of the following documents:
• Passport or other valid travel document;
• Health insurance coverage in Brazil;
• Proof of payment of consular fees;
• Completed visa application form;
• Criminal background certificate;
• Documents proving your status as a digital nomad.
The application for temporary residence permit must be submitted through the Migranteweb System of the General Coordination of Labor Immigration of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, upon presentation of the following documents:
• Residence permit application form (Resolution No. 45/Annex I);
• Valid travel document (e.g., passport) or other document proving your identity and nationality, according to the treaties to which Brazil is a party;
• Document proving parentage, unless already included in the travel document;
• Payment of processing fee (GRU);
• Criminal background certificate or equivalent document from the last five years;
• Declaration of not having criminal records in any country in the last five years;
• Documents proving your status as a digital nomad.
How to register as an immigrant?
Registration, with the issuance of the National Migrant Registration Card (“CRNM” in Portuguese), is mandatory for immigrants with a temporary visa or temporary residence permit.
Immigrants entering Brazil with a temporary visa must apply for registration at any Federal Police unit within 90 days of arrival in the country.
For immigrants with temporary residence permission granted in Brazil, registration must be done at the Federal Police unit of their residence within 30 days from the date of publication of the approval.
Renewal of residence
Digital nomads registered in Brazil can apply for the renewal of their residence permit in Brazil for the same period also through the MigranteWeb System.
