Ten cities join the Intelligent Tourist Destinations project

The Federal District and nine other Brazilian cities are now part of the pilot project Intelligent Tourist Destinations (DTIs), resulting from a technical cooperation agreement between the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations (MCTI) and the Ministry of Tourism (MTur). The commitment with the ten cities was signed this Wednesday (30).

From now on, a diagnosis of the destinations will be made for the development of the municipalities. The locations will receive support from the Federal Government for the preparation of projects aimed at improving the reception of tourists, such as accessibility, sustainability projects, and environmental care, security improvements, connectivity, and interactivity, with free wi-fi points, among others.

The expectation is to make each chosen destination an environment that can convey an innovative and unique experience to visitors, with more competitive and attractive destinations. Furthermore, it aims to improve management, ensuring economic, social, and environmental sustainability in an innovative way.

“We need to provide adequate infrastructure to properly serve tourists, both from our country and abroad, who come to visit our Brazil,” stated the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovations, Marcos Pontes. “There is a concern to use technology to improve the quality of life of the people living in that area, but also to favor tourism, to favor the sustainable use of natural resources through technology, so that we can improve the economic and social development of the region.”
Cities

The pilot project for the implementation of Intelligent Tourist Destinations includes two cities from each region: Rio Branco/AC and Palmas/TO (North); Recife/PE and Salvador/BA (Northeast); Campo Grande/MS and Brasília/DF (Midwest); Florianópolis/SC and Curitiba/PR (South); and Rio de Janeiro/RJ and Angra dos Reis/RJ (Southeast).

“Count on us to build an equipment that truly assists tourism, that transforms into jobs and income for the population,” emphasized the Minister of Tourism, Gilson Machado. “Our country has one of the greatest potentials in the world for the recovery [of tourism]. And the whole world will want nature tourism, will want what Brazil has that other countries do not.”
Intelligent Tourist Destination

The concept of Intelligent Tourist Destinations (DTIs) was developed by the State Mercantile Society for the Management of Innovation and Tourist Technologies, from Spain, in 2013. The project was adapted by the Argentine institute Ciudades Del Futuro (ICF). The two institutions are partners of Brazil in the implementation of the project.

Intelligent Tourist Destination has been defined as an “innovative tourist space, accessible to all, consolidated on a cutting-edge technological infrastructure that ensures the sustainable development of the territory, facilitates the interaction and integration of the visitor with the surroundings, and enhances the quality of their experience at the destination and the quality of life of residents.”

There are five pillars of the project: governance, innovation, technology, sustainability, and accessibility. The expectation is that a methodology will be developed that can be replicated for any other destination interested in becoming a DTI.
