Donald Trump is set to surrender to a court in New York this Tuesday (4) and officially become the first former president in U.S. history to face criminal charges.
The legal team of Trump stated that the former president will plead not guilty and contest “all possible issues” as soon as the charges become public.
Trump, who is running for the 2024 presidential elections, said he will continue his candidacy. He promised to speak to his supporters after leaving the court this Tuesday.
A man accustomed to the spotlight and skilled at turning campaign rallies into spectacles, as seen in the 2016 election race, Trump did not miss the opportunity to use the criminal charges against him for electoral purposes. With virtually no chance of being jailed (he will likely post bail and respond to the charges while free), the former president has already stated that his indictment is purely political and has been calling on his electoral base to take to the streets in protest.
According to CNN, Trump hired a cameraman to accompany him since he left Florida for New York to present himself to justice. Sources close to the former president’s team reported that the cameraman will document the behind-the-scenes of Trump’s surrender. The material is expected to be used for his political advantage.
It is unclear whether the cameraman will be able to film inside the courtroom when the charges are read and formalized. A judge decided on Monday (3) that media outlets will not be allowed to broadcast the hearing, but photographers will be able to take pictures before the session begins.
