Caruarú, City of the Largest Open-Air Market

Amidst the typical vegetation of the arid Northeast, Caruarú attracts thousands of visitors seeking to experience some of the local cultural events and to get to know this important artistic center of Pernambuco.

Declared a historical and immaterial heritage by the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (Iphan), the Feira Livre de Caruarú is the largest open-air market in the world, covering an area of 90,000 square meters. In this traditional shopping center, one can find a wide variety of typical handicrafts, such as leather and ceramic products, clothing and accessories, as well as regional foods like sun-dried beef and couscous.

Just 7 km from the center, Alto de Moura is the most famous neighborhood in the city. The artistic community has become a worldwide reference and is considered by UNESCO as the largest center of figurative arts in the Americas. There, one can be amazed by incredible handcrafted works made of clay. Alto do Moura gained international notoriety thanks to the artisan Vitalino Pereira dos Santos, better known as Mestre Vitalino. The artist used to immerse his hands in the clay, which can now

be appreciated at the Museu Casa do Mestre Vitalino.

Another interesting visit is to Morro do Bom Jesus, the highest point in the city, at 630 meters. From there, one can enjoy an incredible view of the region.

The city also hosts one of the largest and most traditional typical events in the country, the São João de Caruarú. Throughout June, the Parque de Eventos Luiz Lua Gonzaga hosts parties where everyone dances to the sounds of forró and xaxado (typical Northeastern musical styles).

The event features attractions ranging from quadrilhas (a typical dance of the June festivals) to giant food parties.
