The Brazilian Library of New York will host a performance of Greenhouse, an interactive theatrical adaptation of Machado de Assis’s classic novella O Alienista. The production was developed by an American team in collaboration with Brazilian artists, offering a contemporary reinterpretation of one of the most important works of Brazilian literature.
Inspired by the story of Dr. Simão Bacamarte, a physician who founded Casa Verde to study the human mind, the production explores the boundaries between reason and madness while raising a contemporary question: when public institutions collapse, whom can we trust?
Featuring extensive audience participation, Greenhouse makes spectators part of the story. Throughout the performance, audience members are invited to vote, sing and even rebel to decide who should take power, as representatives of science, religion, traditional politics and revolutionary movements vie to influence the story’s direction.
The concept combines theater, interaction and political and social reflection, connecting Machado de Assis’s work to contemporary debates about power, democracy and trust in institutions.
