Brazilian Film on Indigenous Resistance Wins Award at Cannes

The Brazilian feature film A Flor do Buriti (Flor do Buriti), produced by Brazilian Renée Nader Messora and Portuguese João Salaviza, won an award at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival in France. It received the Prix D’ensemble in the “Un Certain Regard” section.

The film, a production of Entre Filmes, which premiered on May 23, delves into the last 80 years of the history of the Krahô, an indigenous people living in the north of the state of Tocantins, bordering the states of Maranhão and Piauí. It portrays different forms of resistance, such as the struggle for land, greater freedom, the preservation of ancestral rites, and the nature of the communities where they live. A highlighted event in the feature is the massacre that occurred in 1940. It is estimated that local farmers killed at least 26 members of the Krahô people.
