Brazil Wants to Be an Event Destination

An initiative of the Brazil Convention & Visitors Bureaux (BRC&VB), the Brazilian Events Bank will register itinerant international events and destinations interested in hosting these events according to the demand presented.

Since its launch in 2016, the bank has already registered 115 destinations. With the information provided by event organizers – attractions of interest, number of beds, and available infrastructure – cities and municipalities can apply to host the event and start attracting the conference or fair in question.

The year 2016 was a record for international events, with 12,212 of them held worldwide. However, Brazil managed to attract only 244, which is less than 2% of that total.

“We created this tool with the aim of helping Brazil attract more and more events, as we believe that business tourism, just like leisure tourism, can be an important engine for the Brazilian economy, capable of generating jobs and income across all segments,” said the president of the Brazil Convention & Visitors Bureaux, Márcio Santiago.

The Events Bank was launched on December 14, 2016. “The event tourism sector in Brazil contributes significantly to our activity, but we can go further, and structuring the events bank is a primary initiative to attract more events,” defended the Minister of Tourism, Marx Beltrão.

Ranking

According to the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), in 2016 Brazil continued to be the South American country that hosted the largest number of events (244) on the continent.

According to the Ministry of Tourism’s international demand study, 20.2% of foreign tourists who came to Brazil in 2015 did so for business, events, and conventions. The most sought-after cities were: São Paulo (45.1%), Rio de Janeiro (24.5%), and Curitiba (4.2%). The average per capita spending of tourists was US$ 82.48, more than that of leisure tourists – US$ 67.12.
