Brazil and the USA Sign Cooperation Agreement on Security

The Ministry of Justice and Public Security signed institutional cooperation agreements with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the USA and the Department of Homeland Security to share information on the activities of criminal and terrorist groups.

The agreements were signed by the Director-General of the Brazilian Federal Police, Maurício Valeixo, during President Bolsonaro’s visit to the USA, which ended on March 19. The initiative aims at a joint fight against transnational organized crime, reinforcing existing cooperation efforts between the two countries, the ministry reported.

The pact with the FBI, the ministry continued, includes the exchange of information for the identification of fingerprints in criminal investigations.

The partnership with the Department of Homeland Security of the USA, in turn, allows for the exchange of agents in programs developed by both countries, especially aimed at facilitating the exchange of information about threats at the national borders of Brazil and the USA.

Also during Bolsonaro’s trip, Minister Sergio Moro took the opportunity provided by meetings with American leaders to discuss an anti-crime law that the government sent to Congress proposing changes to various laws to combat corruption, violent crimes, and criminal organizations.

The work of criminal organizations in Brazil and the measures adopted by the State to confront them were also mentioned, such as the recent transfer of faction leaders to maximum-security federal prisons, and the importance of Brazil’s adherence to the Budapest Convention — an international treaty signed at the Council of Europe on cybercrime.
