Brazil to Accept More Syrian Refugees – The Brasilians

Brazil to Accept More Syrian Refugees

During a meeting with the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, President Michel Temer pledged that Brazil will receive more Syrian refugees. According to data from the Ministry of Justice, the country has already welcomed 2,298 people who fled the war in Syria.

Temer also reported to Ban Ki-moon that a bill now being reviewed by the Brazilian congress will establish a new law on migration. The purpose of the bill is to ensure rights to migrants and consolidate the humanitarian visa, an instrument already used for 85,000 Haitians who left the Caribbean country after the 2010 earthquake.

During the meeting, Temer also reaffirmed Brazil’s commitment to continue helping Haiti with humanitarian actions. Brazil has lead the UN Mission for the Stabilization of Haiti (MINUSTAH) since 2004, and has sent over 33,000 military personnel to the country.
