Brazil Launches Gun Control Offensive with National Firearm Registration

The Brazilian government is promoting new gun control regulations, requiring owners to register each of their firearms with the police.

This broad firearm registration program comes after its predecessor, former President Jair Bolsonaro, campaigned on a pro-gun platform and, once in office, revoked regulations on private gun ownership. He also changed the rules regarding the amount of ammunition a person can possess and made it easier to access restricted caliber firearms.

The current government stated that in-person registration could help accurately determine how many firearms exist in the country and, potentially, how many are no longer with their original owners or may have fallen into criminal hands.

On January 1st, the first day of Lula in office, he issued a decree requiring gun owners to register their firearms with the Federal Police. The original deadline was postponed to May 3rd.

The decree establishes that unregistered firearms by the deadline may be seized.
