Brazil and the USA United Against Transnational Crime – The Brasilians

Brazil and the USA United Against Transnational Crime

With the aim of intensifying the fight against drug, arms, and human trafficking, as well as the repression of financial crime, Brazil and the United States ratified several bilateral agreements during a recent trip to Washington DC. The mission was led by Brazil’s Minister of Justice and Public Security, Torquato Jardim.

According to Jardim, the agreements cover technology transfers and measures to strengthen the fight against transnational crime. “Technology is fundamental when we think about the extent of crimes, criminal organizations, and the international relations involved. It is of little use to hold a public competition and hire more professionals when we need to operate satellites and drones and manage 17,000 km of land border,” the minister explained.

In addition to the importance of modernizing the system, Jardim highlighted the ongoing process of integration among the different agencies operating under the Ministry of Justice – including the Federal Police (PF), the Federal Highway Police (PRF), the National Secretariat of Public Security (Senasp), the National Penitentiary Department, and the National Indian Foundation (Funai).

The mission also ensured the return of the Brazilian Federal Police to Ameripol, an organization linked to the Organization of American States (OAS) that brings together police forces from various countries on the continent.
