The Brazilian Academy of Cinema announced “Bingo – The King of Mornings,” directed by Daniel Rezende, as the Brazilian film selected to compete in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars next year.
Based on a true story, “Bingo – The King of Mornings” is a film about the man behind the mask. Augusto is an artist searching for his place in the spotlight, following in the footsteps of his mother, a stage performer from the 50s. Restless in his quest 
for applause, he finds a chance to win over the crowds when he becomes “BINGO,” a clown host of one of the leading children’s TV shows of the 80s. With makeup, Augusto becomes an absolute success. But a clause in his contract prohibits him from revealing his identity; an anonymous celebrity. Augusto transforms into a clown who brings joy to children across the country, but not to his own son, Gabriel, who sees his father, idol and companion, drift away in search of fame. Full of irony and humor, with the exaggerated pop visuals of the behind-the-scenes world of Brazilian television in the 80s, the film tells the incredible and surreal story of a man who, in seeking his artistic value, finds his personal decline.
Jorge Peregrino, vice president of the Brazilian Academy, says that this year’s film selection proved to be truly remarkable, but added that The King of Mornings exceeded all expectations. The selected film competed alongside 22 other films.
The 90th Academy Awards will be broadcast live on ABC on March 4, 2018. The Oscar nominations will be announced on January 23, 2018.
