Supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro gathered on Sunday afternoon (02/25) in São Paulo. Wearing yellow t-shirts and carrying flags of Brazil and Israel, they arrived at the rally on buses with license plates from outside the city and from other states.
The former president – who has been banned by the Superior Electoral Court from running for public office until 2030 for the misuse of economic power – criticized the decisions of the Supreme Federal Court and called for amnesty for those convicted for the invasion on January 8, whom he referred to as “allies.”
Bolsonaro is being investigated by the Federal Police and the Supreme Federal Court for the attack launched on January 8, 2023, on the government headquarters in Brasília, in an attempt to abolish the democratic rule of law and stage a coup.
In his speech, Bolsonaro acknowledged the existence of a document that provided for a state of siege, the arrest of parliamentarians and Supreme Court ministers, and supported a supposed coup. However, he criticized the criminal investigations associated with the document.
Copies of this document were found by the police at the home of Bolsonaro’s former Minister of Justice, Anderson Torres, and at the office of the Liberal Party (PL) in Brasília, of which the former leader is a part. The draft was also mentioned in the plea bargain agreement of Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, who served as Bolsonaro’s aide-de-camp.
Other details are being investigated, such as the video of a meeting held at the presidential residence of Alvorada in July 2022. At that time, direct advisors to the former president and a group of military personnel suggested alternatives to attack the electronic voting system, as well as the 2022 presidential elections.
