The American Corners in Brazil are spaces dedicated to engaging in public diplomacy and disseminating information, hosted in universities, libraries, SENAC, and SESC, usually in areas where the U.S. Mission has limited presence.
The American Corners present visitors with the true history of the United States. By providing a multifunctional platform for programs, offering multimedia content and access to technology, the Corners in Brazil promote open dialogue, combat negative prejudices, and build bridges of understanding. Each Corner must offer information about the U.S., alumni activities, educational guidance, cultural programs, and resources in English.
There are five American Corners in Brazil:
• Boa Vista: The Abraham Lincoln space was inaugurated on April 10, 2014, and was the fourth American Corner established in Brazil. The corner is located at the SENAC Language Center. It provides current information about the U.S. to students, entrepreneurs, university professors, and the community.
• Campo Grande: The Campo Grande American Corner was inaugurated on July 30, 2014, and was the fifth American Corner established in Brazil. The corner is located at SESC Horto and has an average of over 7,000 visitors per month. • Salvador: The Benjamin Franklin Space was inaugurated on October 27, 2006, and was the third American Corner established in Brazil. The AC Salvador provides access to current and reliable information about the U.S. through collections of books, periodicals, databases, and local programming.
