September 23 – International Day Against Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking of Persons

September 23 is the International Day Against Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking of Women and Children. On this date, various actions are carried out to combat and prevent this form of modern slavery.

UN data indicates that there are about 2.5 million victims of human trafficking, and the number may be much higher than the official count. Human trafficking is the third most profitable illicit activity in the world and has various purposes, such as forced labor and organ selling, but most women and girls who are trafficked are forced into prostitution.

The victims generally come from poor countries with no prospects for young people. The recruiters can be men or women. According to Interpol, recruiters currently use new technological platforms to recruit, transport, house, and exploit trafficked individuals, thus reaching a larger number of potential victims anywhere in the world.

The date was chosen at the World Coalition Conference Against Trafficking of Women in 1999, inspired by the Palácios Law from Argentina, enacted on September 23, 1913, to punish those who promoted or facilitated prostitution and the corruption of minors. This law inspired other countries to protect their populations, especially women and children, against sexual exploitation and human trafficking.
