Three-time Formula One world champion Ayrton Senna has officially been recognized as a National Hero. Law 15.447/2026 provides for the former driver’s name to be inscribed in the Book of Heroes and Heroines of the Nation, kept at the Pantheon of the Fatherland in the Three Powers Plaza in Brasília.
The legislation, signed into law by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, originated from Bill 789/2024, introduced by Senator Astronauta Marcos Pontes (PL-SP). The measure received a favorable report from Senator Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO) and was approved in a final decision by the Senate Sports Committee in May, without requiring a floor vote.
The title of National Hero or Heroine honors prominent figures who played a significant role in defending or building the country and was created in 1992.
Ayrton Senna won three Formula One world titles (1988, 1990 and 1991) and 41 Grands Prix during his career. In 2023, he had already been named Patron of Brazilian Sport.
Senna died tragically in a crash on May 1, 1994, at the age of 34, during the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola, Italy.
