The 50th Anniversary of Pelé’s Thousandth Goal – The Brasilians

The 50th Anniversary of Pelé’s Thousandth Goal

On November 19, 1969, a Wednesday, Pelé, who had been chasing his thousandth goal for a few matches, seemed to have left the historic mark at the stadium where Santos liked to
play and where he had won the two-time world club championship. The opponent was Vasco, and the match was valid for the then Roberto Gomes Pedrosa Tournament. Santos’ second goal, which secured the 2-1 victory, came at 33 minutes into the second half, from a foul committed on the King of Football – a foul heavily contested by the Vasco players, who claimed Pelé had dived in the play. But the penalty was awarded, and Pelé took it to the right corner, to the despair of goalkeeper Andrada, who jumped to the right side but could not prevent what would be Pelé’s thousandth goal.Source: CBF
