Uçá Crabs Rescued by ICMBio

Between January 15 and 18, the inspection carried out by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) rescued more than 2,000 uçá crabs. During the inspection, conducted by four environmental analysts from the Extractive Reserve (Resex) of Acaú-Goiana, located between Paraíba and Pernambuco, the species were released into the mangrove, and the responsible parties fled.

The president of ICMBio, Homero Cerqueira, stated that the Institute has established a “zero tolerance” policy against environmental crimes.

This action is part of the closed season for the species, a time of “walking” when capture is prohibited, as the animals leave their burrows and “walk” through the mangrove for mating.
