Brazil has a record number of voters abroad

About 697,000 Brazilians with electoral domicile abroad are eligible to vote in 2022 exclusively for the positions of president and vice president of the Republic. According to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), this number is 39.21% higher than in the last election in 2018, when it surpassed 500,000.

This year, Brazilian voters will be able to vote in 181 foreign cities. At the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the TSE authorized polling places outside the embassies and consular offices in 21 countries for the 2022 elections.

Lisbon is the city with the highest number of Brazilians eligible to vote, with 45,200 voters. Following are Miami and Boston, both in the United States, with 40,100 and 37,100 voters, respectively. There is also a considerable number in Nagoya, Japan, with 35,600 Brazilians, and in London, England, with 34,400.

Women make up the majority of the electorate abroad, representing 58.54%. Most voters are between 35 and 44 years old.

The Regional Electoral Court (TRE) of the Federal District is the body responsible for organizing the voting abroad, with the support of consulates and diplomatic missions in the respective countries.
Voters

Also abroad, voting is optional for those under 18, over 70, and illiterate individuals.

Brazilians with electoral domicile abroad who cannot attend on election day will have to justify their absence via e-Título, the Justifica System, or by submitting the Electoral Justification Request form (to be delivered after the election).

Those who maintain electoral domicile in Brazil but are abroad on election day will also have to justify their absence in the election.
