Golden Globe: “Oppenheimer” Surpasses “Barbie” and Wins Five Awards

The 2024 Golden Globe Awards, hosted by comedian Jo Koy and broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, took place on Sunday (7) filled with stars on the red carpet.

The films “Barbie” and “Succession” arrived at the awards with nine nominations. “Barbie” was competing for the award for Best Musical or Comedy Film but lost to “Poor Things,” while “Succession” was nominated and won the award for Best Television Drama. The stars of “Succession,” Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, and Matthew MacFadyen, also took home acting awards for their roles in the acclaimed HBO series.

But the team behind “Barbie” did not come home empty-handed. They took the award in a new category: box office, grossing $1.44 billion against $952 million of “Oppenheimer.” The film also won the award for Best Original Song.

“Oppenheimer,” the other half of the box office phenomenon dubbed “Barbenheimer,” received eight nominations, the second most for any film or TV show. “Oppenheimer” won the award for Best Drama Film, surpassing five other films, including Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Bradley Cooper’s biopic of Leonard Bernstein, “Maestro.”

The director of “Oppenheimer,” Christopher Nolan, also took home a Golden Globe, as did actors Robert Downey Jr. and Cillian Murphy, and the film’s composer, Ludwig Göransson.

This was the first Golden Globe held since the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which conducted the awards ceremony, was dissolved after a series of scandals.
